Friday, July 25th, 2008
For those interested in understanding media beyond their immediate appearance Marshall McLuhan remains without a doubt still one of the richest and most inspiring resources. His books and writings offer a wealth of insights into the media transformation and changes we are witnessing now, over 30 years after he described and anticipated them. Marshall-McLuhan-241857251_231946c430-333.jpg Author of several books including the famous The Medium is the Message, Canadian-born McLuhan was also director of the Center for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto. Of Marshall McLuhan I am offering you today a short clip that I recently stumbled upon. It contains Marshall McLuhan's voice as recorded on a TV show of the early seventies matched to visual imagery that has been added at a later time. Originally aired on PBS-TV, 4 January, 1971 at 8:00 p.m. (Philadelphia, PA area), it was recorded over 35 years ago during the "Speaking Freely" show hosted by NBC's Edwin Newman. Here is the full original recording in MP3 format. Observe how alive much of McLuhan's message is and how relevant it stands in today's Internet world. "Today almost every business and social activity is a form of media. " writes Ross Dawson in this report. It is in the understanding of how the changes and innovations you and I are seeing today that one can build an effective media strategy for tomorrow. It is by understanding first the value and application of such new media trends, such as social networks or grassroots generated content, that one can best leverage, limit or even outlaw their use if they do not fit, enhance or complement your own communication, marketing and business goals. It is not by jumping on every single train that comes by whistling that you can ever get to paradise. It is rather by finding where and what appearance your paradise has that you can come to eventually pick up the right train and station to get there. Standards, Relationships, Connectivity, Interfaces, Content, and Services: these, according to this Future of Media report, are the key fundamental elements at work inside new knowledge economy. If you can ride them somehow, and use them constructively to develop more and better relationships with your own customers, you may be seeding the most fertile seeds for a long, profitable and successful media future. Here all the details:
